American Moslem Society (AMS) is renowned as the premier center for the gathering of communities in the Southeast Dearborn area. AMS provides Moslems with a holy institution where they can practice their religion in a comfortable, safe, and spiritual environment. Community members visit AMS on a daily basis for worshiping and prayer, yet also look forward to many exciting events and services offered by AMS throughout the year. These activities include religious & public events, holiday celebrations, community empowerment, health education and recreational events and activities for youth.
The Holy Month of Ramadan is one of the major events held at AMS each year. Ramadan is the Islamic month in which Moslems fast from dawn until sunset in recognition of the month in which Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) began to receive the words of Allah, which were later written down by scholars to form the Holy Koran. The purpose of fasting is to teach Moslems patience, modesty, and spirituality. Moslems offer additional prayers during the month of Ramadan and pray for the strength and guidance to refrain from everyday evils. They exhibit this strength through self-restraint and virtuous conduct. AMS offers a daily Iftar dinner, followed by lecture and prayers during the entire month of Ramadan. Upon completion of Ramadan, AMS holds a unique celebration in which many Moslems and Non-Moslems participate. This holy celebration is known as Eid Elfitr (Festivity to Break Fast) and includes gift distribution for all children attending, Eid Prayer, lecture, and many celebratory activities for youth.
Similarly, another major Islamic holiday, Eid Aladha (Festival of Sacrifice), takes place approximately two months after Eid Alfitr. Eid Aladha is an important religious holiday celebrated by Moslems worldwide to commemorate the willingness of Prophet Ibraham (PBUH) to sacrifice his son, Prophet Ismael (PBUH), as an act of obedience to Allah. AMS plays a very critical role during these holy events where it is a central point for thousands of community members to gather and spend time with family and friends to celebrate.
Although AMS celebrates these joyful events, it also assists community members during difficult times, such as marital discourse or bereavement, by offering counseling and community support. AMS has developed a comprehensive approach to supporting family members during the death of a loved one. AMS provides support and guidance during the entire burial process. AMS owns a private cemetery and continues to provide its burial services to the utmost expectations.
In addition, AMS recognizes that dissemination of information and prevention are key elements in public health. AMS promotes wellness and prevention throughout the community and works in identifying effective prevention approaches by partnering with health care professionals to combat diseases. Furthermore, AMS also partners with national and global humanitarian organizations to raise money, food and other support for the poor and victims of natural disasters.
Throughout our website, you will find the various services provided by AMS. We at AMS strive to promote a healthy and peaceful environment and empower the community to live and develop healthy lives.
